Nathan texted me that the summer reading program at our library back home had started. I had totally forgotten it would be starting so soon.
Last year, Nathan and I had a little competition to see who could read the most hours in one night. I, being a night owl and determined not to get beat, cannot even recall how late I remained awake, but it was probably around 1 in the morning before I finally turned in. I did manage to pull out a win that night, but overall, I believe our hours tied up in the end anyway.
With 15 proud hours of hard reading under my belt, I received 15 tickets to enter in a drawing for a prize. I was relatively pleased with myself, although I knew Claire had many more than I did.
Paige then came in with her 60 hour sheet all colored in. I was in shock as she began writing on the tickets and dumping them into containers left and right.
The prizes she really wanted were a set with artsy things, and of course, like everyone else, especially Nathan, she wanted the iTunes gift card.
We played a game, had pizza and chatted for most of the evening. When the drawing came around, it was an exciting moment as the summer reading we had accomplished had just been cashed in (I forgot to mention that only Paige, Nathan, Claire and I happened to be involved in this event last year).
Paige won the iTunes gift card (but I think we all saw that coming :) the unexpected twist, however, is that Nathan won the artsy set that Paige had really had her eyes on.
Nathan taunted Paige with the ideas of trades and deals and I'm not really sure how the whole thing turned out, but in the end everyone was happy.
Paige walked away with all of the other prizes, save the one Nathan had somehow miraculously won.
Paige, of course, being the generous kind of person she is, shared her prizes around and afterwards we went for ice cream.
This year, I want to walk into that library with all of my hours filled. I only have 4 hours so far, but hopefully with a little bit of effort I will have more before the contest comes to an end.
So, I guess I'll be in reading mode until August 5th :)
Until Next Time,
Katherine Rose
