Daniel Johnson, Sr.

I recently became interested in the history of Daniel Johnson, Sr. the 20th premier of Quebec.

Daniel Johnson, Sr.
Daniel Johnson, Sr. was born in Danville, Quebec, Canada on April 9th, 1915. He became a lawyer and a member of the political party Union Nationale. This party was founded by Maurice Duplessis. It was formed first as a loose coalition of legislators on November 7th, 1935 and later was  founded as a political party on June 20th, 1936. It dispersed June 19th, 1989 just a day before it's 55 year as a political party.
Johnson married Reine Gagné and had two sons. Daniel Jonson, Jr. and Pierre-Marc Johnson, who both later became premiers of Quebec.
Daniel Johnson wrote a book titled Égalité ou indépendance which translates into Equality or Independence. It is among the many books in the vast collection of the library of Congress. It was under this logo, Égalité ou indépendance  that his party won the 1966 election and he became the 20th premier of Quebec.
He died in office September 26, 1968 at age 53. The  manic-5 dam was renamed Daniel-Johnson Dam in honor of Daniel Johnson. The dam was officially dedicated by  Jean-Jacques Bertrand the 21st Premier of Quebec on September 26, 1969 a year after Johnson's death.
He was buried in Saint-Pie de bagot cemetery, Monteregie Region, Quebec, Canada.
If you find anything else interesting about Daniel Johnson please leave a comment, I would love to hear from you!

Until Next Time,
    Meredith
